Modern apprenticeships offer on the job training and the opportunity to earn an industry recognised qualification from NVQ’s to a Foundation Degree. At present there are far more applicants than there are places available so competition is tough and employers can afford to be choosy.
Trade Apprenticeships
This is the traditional route into the construction industry for school leavers who want to learn a skill such as plumbing, carpentry, bricklaying etc. This combines working on-site and training at college over two years which will lead to an NVQ. You can continue for a further year to achieve a Level 3 qualification which is the equivalent of an A level.
Higher Apprenticeships
Higher apprenticeships are for people wanting to pursue a career at technical or management level and can lead to a higher level qualification or foundation degree. Again, you will receive work based training combined with a course of study at college.
There are no set minimum requirements for acceptance but the more qualifications and experience you have the greater your advantage. However, 5 good GCSE’s, 2 A levels or a level 3 qualification are generally accepted as the minimum you’ll need to get into a higher apprenticeship program.
Getting Started
Start by searching for or browsing through various job types on the bConstructive website then complete an application form. When you application has been processed you’ll undergo an assessment where you’ll have the chance to discuss your options. Then you can start applying to companies for a placement.

The apprenticeship scheme is offered by a range of employers from local tradesmen and contractors to international building companies.
